Overview
Gwalia Lightning is one of two Welsh franchises competing in the Celtic Challenge, representing the eastern regions of Wales. Established in 2023, the team provides a vital platform for emerging Welsh talent to compete at the highest level. Home fixtures are hosted at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach.
Coaching Team
Head Coach: Catrina Nicholas-McLaughlin
Former Wales international Catrina Nicholas-McLaughlin leads Gwalia Lightning as head coach. With 60 caps for Wales and experience coaching the national U18 and U20 women’s teams, she brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the squad.

Leadership
- Captain: Bryonie King
Bryonie King served as the captain of Gwalia Lightning during the 2024/25 Celtic Challenge season and continues in her role for the 2025/26 season. Her leadership was instrumental in guiding the squad to a commendable third-place finish in the competition.
