

Gwalia Lightning
Overview
Gwalia Lightning is one of two Welsh franchises competing in the Celtic Challenge, representing the eastern regions of Wales. Established in 2023, the team provides a vital platform for emerging Welsh talent to compete at the highest level. Home fixtures are hosted at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, with training sessions held there and at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Coaching Team
Head Coach: Catrina Nicholas-McLaughlin
Former Wales international Catrina Nicholas-McLaughlin leads Gwalia Lightning as head coach. With 60 caps for Wales and experience coaching the national U18 and U20 women’s teams, she brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the squad.
