Two new Welsh teams were introduced to the cross-border competition in the 2023/24 season, one being Gwalia Lightning.
Developed in collaboration with current players, the brands for the two WRU owned franchises are inspired by ‘Brython’, the first Celtic language, and ‘Gwalia’, the original name for Wales.
Gwalia Lightning will wear Blue and Yellow, be based and train at Cardiff Metropolitan University and play their home games at Cardiff Arms Park.
Former Wales international Catrina Nicholas-McLaughlin took charge of the coaching and management team for Gwalia Lightning.
Catrina Nicholas-McLaughlin, Gwalia Lightning Head coach, said:
“The Celtic Challenge proved a fantastic experience for our young squad, and they used it to further their development as players.
“The likes of Nel Metcalfe, Gwennan Hopkins, Sian Jones and Molly Reardon used it as a real launchpad for recognition as a higher level and established them in the Wales senior squad and after the tournament went on to play for their clubs in England.
“We established our team and playing identity during the campaign and having experienced internationals like Bryonie King and Kate Williams in the squad gave some real experience for the younger players to lean on.”
